It's the eve of the Prom and Giles manages to translate a disturbing prophecy from "The Pergamum Codex" "The Master shall rise and the Slayer shall die".

Although Giles tries to keep this a secret from Buffy, she overhears him discussing the prophecy with Angel. Buffy reacts, dismissing both the prophecy and continuing as The Slayer.

After hearing about the death of two students on campus at the handes of vampires, Buffy decides that she will attempt to defeat The Master. Giles puts up a fight and will not allow her saying that he will take her place. Buffy knocks him out.

Buffy confronts The Master but he is too strong and kills her, leaving her face down in water. Angel and Xander arrive in time for Xander to use CPR to revive her.

The three return to Sunnydale High to discover that the Hellmouth is opening in the Library and that Giles , Jenny, Willow and Cordelia are battling the creature attempting to break free.

Buffy confronts The Master again on the roof, to The Masters surprise. Now unable to control Buffy The Master is thrown through the Skylight of the Library onto a table leg which he is imapled on. The Master turns to dust leaving only the bones and the creature from the Hellmouth returns from where it came from.
